Nomination: British Breakthrough Act
I don’t think there was any better award Stormzy could have been nominated for apart from maybe British Male Solo Artist. Best British Breakthrough Act is truly fitting. Coming onto most people’s playlists in 2015 with Know Me From which featured his own mother in the video, the summer freestyle & smash hit Shut Up changed Stormzy's acceptance within the mainstream.
From a track that was a freestyle, or Fire In the Park, it had become so popular that it was re-packaged as a single in a bid for the coveted Christmas Number One spot in December 2015. Although, it didn’t get to Number 1 it charted at Number 8 and went gold in the United Kingdom, selling over 400,000 units. Not many other UK rappers (excluding Tinie Tempah) have matched this achievement.
Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, has also gone on to work with Adidas, perform for Anthony Joshua, interview Kevin Hart & Ice Cube & so much more!
With his album GSAP: Gang Signs and Prayers dropping two days after the BRIT Awards 2017, it would be a mad if Stormzy would add this achievement to his mantel piece.
