The news cycle has been dominated by chemical attack in Syria’s Idlib province which killed at least 89 people. It was a horrific crime and tragedy, implemented according to intelligence to dictator Bashar al-Assad.
The first condemnation we heard from the US President was released just hours after the attack, and a day later, Trump appeared publicly to describe the incident as an “affront to humanity”, clarifying that it “crossed a lot of lines”. On April 6th, Trump confirmed a US direct attack on a Syrian government airfield.
There are numerous implications for the geopolitics of the region, and USA's relationship with Assad's ally: Russia. But the most striking thing is Trump's hypocrisy.
Firstly, Trump implied his military action was being done with humane intent, yet one of his first acts as President was to ban Syrian refugees. Trump has gone from declaring that he would “look Syrian children in the face and tell them they can’t come here” to calling them “children of God”.
Secondly, Trump effectively reversed a position he not only campaigned on, but publicly vocalised for years, in a stretch of just 24 to 48 hours. He tweeted repeatedly in 2013 again action in Syria, criticising Obama for even considering it.
Sammy messaged the show to praise Trump for this move, however, Benji Hyer reminded Sammy that this wasn't Trump's stance all along...
