The Young Adult Literature Convention took place for the first time in 2014 and it returned this year in full force. Inviting everyone with a love for books, it allows you to learn so much more about the world of publishing. Here are a few tips on how to have an amazing weekend at YALC.

Here are Lekhika Chaudhary’s tips on how to how to get the most out of the event.

1 – Create a timetable
Make sure you know in advance what the schedule is like. This is super important as then you can plan what workshops, panels, talks to attend and which authors to meet. This also ensures that you don’t end up missing out on something key! Everything is up on the YALC website and the timetable is released well in advance! This will ensure you have a smooth weekend and that it is one you have made the most out of.

2 – Take a bag
The temptation to purchase all the books on display and to take more than one freebie is actually unreal. Make sure you take a large and comfortable bag to store all your goodies! A rucksack will do; however if you know that you cannot resist books: a small suitcase might be ideal! (P.S. many people brought one and it was a fabulous idea!).

3 – Know what you want out of your weekend
It is super important to know what you want to achieve from the convention. Do you want to purchase some books that are recommended to you based on your tastes? Do you want to join a book club? Do you want to talk to publishing agents about publishing your secret novel? Do you want a career in publishing? Whatever it is, make sure you know what you want and find out how you can get it (make a note of who to talk to as well!).

4 – Pack a lunch
And yes, this seems like a minor detail but it is a good one. It is so much better to bring your own food and drinks. It saves money and time; it also allows you to eat wherever you want. This means that you can queue to meet an author and eat at the same time! Plus, having snacks at various points throughout the day ensures that your energy level doesn’t drop.

5 – Enjoy yourself
The main thing is that you have fun. YALC is super relaxed and is such an amazing experience. From meeting authors to participating in workshops with them, from meeting publishers and agents to attending talks: there is something for every book lover. It is a meeting of the fandoms and my main advice is to just have fun: make friends and get to know people.
