When Mark Morrison released the legendary ‘Return Of The Mack’in 1996, he didn’t realise that his banger would one day be used to introduce an interview with a Disney Channel star.
But that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Imagine finding out that the woman you have always thought was your sister actually turns out to be your mother… and the woman who you always thought was your mother is actually your grandmother!
It happened to Jack Nicholson, and in Disney Channel’s latest soon-to-be-hit programme ‘Andi Mack’, it happens to 13 year-old Andi Mack too.
As if that major bombshell of a storyline isn’t enough to convince you – the programme is created by ‘Lizzie McGuire’ creator Terri Minsky (the woman who is basically responsible for bringing Hillary Duff into the world – well, other than Hillary Duff’s mother).
Oh, and the theme tune is sung by the ever-talent, beautiful, incredible, one-of-a-kind, generous… Sabrina Carpenter.
We sat down with Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who plays the lead role Andi Mack about the programme, the arts and crafts in the show and more.
WR: Hi Peyton! How would you describe your new show?
PEL: Andi Mack is a coming-of-age story about a girl who’s turning 13. The show is about Andi finding out where she belongs in the world and what kind of person she wants to be. I play the lead role, which is really exciting!
WR: What do you love most about the show?
PEL: I love the fact that the show is super relatable. I think it’s really important for youngsters to be able to see that their lives aren’t very different; that they don’t necessarily have it extra hard or extra easy than anyone else. When kids and teens around the world watch Andi Mack, they will be able to realise that they are not alone in this adventure of life. Everybody goes through tough times. Every teenager has that crush. We all go through these things.
WR: What went through your mind when you found out about the huge twist in the first episode of the show?
PEL: I found out about the twist when I read the script for the first episode. I read it and I remember thinking, ‘Wait… What just happened?’ I had to read it four or five times before it really sunk in. It was at that point that I realised that Andi Mack was going to be different from any other show out there. It’s really exciting!
WR: We get to meet Andi’s crush in the show. Who was your first crush?
PEL: Wow, that’s a hard question to answer! Who was my first crush? I guess I would say Ryan Gosling.
WR: Oh, wow! Why?
PEL: Firstly, because his acting is amazing. Plus, La La Land is one of my favourite movies. I think Ryan Gosling is amazing.
WR: Andi us very artistic in the show. Are you similar in real life?
PEL: Andi is very creative and artistic. She has a ton of patience for that stuff, but I don’t. I definitely have less patience for those tiny, little, detail-oriented things that she does in her spare time! When I was younger, I used to love colouring and I loved crafts. I don’t have the time to do stuff like that anymore. Oh, but I do love to be creative with fashion. I love recycling old clothes to make new clothes. And I love shopping. I find stuff like that really fun and interesting.

WR: Being a part of Disney Channel makes you a part of a massive legacy, and almost a new family! How does it feel to be the newest Disney Channel star?
PEL: It feels insane! I feel very, very lucky.
WR: With power comes responsibility… Are you ready to be a role model to millions of Disney Channel fans around the globe?
PEL: I really want to be a positive role model for kids all around the world, so I keep thinking, ‘Don’t mess this up!’ I hope that people see me as an equal; someone who’s going through the same stuff they are going through. That’s why I still attend regular school. I’m not home-schooled. I get up at 7am every day and I go to school. I think it’s really important for kids to have someone on TV who is just like them.
Sabrina Carpenter performs the song's theme tune.
WR: Do you look up to other Disney Channel stars, like Sabrina Carpenter?
PEL: Definitely. People like Sabrina Carpenter and Selena Gomez are really big role models for me. I look up to them as actors, as well as people. I think they are great.
Andi Mack airs on Disney Channel this August, 2017.
