Ex-editor of right wing news publication Breitbart and President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, has been disinvited from the New Yorker Festival after a high-profile backlash over his scheduled appearance.
Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Bill and Hillary, described inviting Bannon as the “normalisation of bigotry”. Since leaving the White House, Bannon has continued to vocally support far-right political causes around the globe, including championing a Europe-wide populist so-called “supergroup”.
On Benji Hyer’s Sunday show, listeners debated whether banning the likes of Bannon sets a dangerous precedent of driving extreme views “underground”, or – instead – if it prevents the further spreading those views to more people.
American listener Conrad was determined to point out that “driving people like Bannon and Trump underground is how we got President Trump in the first place”. However, Benji Hyer felt that it was the other way around, and that giving Trump’s controversial views significant exposure was key to his Presidential victory.
Whilst free speech is essential, some opinions simply should not be tolerated or accepted in modern discourse.
