The sixth book as part of Lekhika Chaudhary's BKMRK book club is SLATED by Teri Terry.

'SLATED' is set in the UK, around 40 years in the future, where the UK has left the EU and closed its borders. However, there’s a twist! That second chance that everyone wants is offered: the ability to be Slated, AKA have your brain wiped completely.

The book centres on Kyla, a young girl who was Slated – her mind wiped clean by the government, her memories all erased and her personality wiped blank.

The government claims she was a terrorist and by Slating her, they have given her a second chance. However, Kyla is different from the rest as her past echoes in her mind. Someone is lying to her and she starts to see that all is not as it seems.

The idea of rehabilitating terrorists and criminals has been a topic of a lot of discussion over the past few years – should criminals be simply punished or given the chance to rehabilitate and assimilate back into society? Slated’s apocalyptic suggestion is to wipe them of everything it means to be human and teach them everything again.

Research suggests that increasing prison sentences is not much of a deterrent and that longer sentences are linked to re-offending... so, perhaps rehabilitation may be the only option.

Inspired by the book, on Lekhika Chaudhary's radio show she asked: Do you think that wiping the slate and erasing memories, if real, would be a good solution to rehabilitate criminals into society?

Broadcasted exclusively worldwide on W!ZARD Radio Station.
